Bisque--Pottery that has been baked once, but does not yet have a glossy coating on it.
Leatherhard--Potteru which is not completely dry, but is stiff enough to handle safely. At this stage surface decoration can be added and scratched into the clay. This type of clay resembles a stiff piece of leather.
Throwing--The act of forming a lump of clay which is spinning rapidly on a flat surface.
Earthenware--Abasic clay body used in ceramics (pottery). The type of clay which we are using may be red or white in colour.
Wedging--A method of kneading a mass of clay to fouce out trapped air, and to make the clay easier to work with.
Kiln--A large oven used to bake and harden the clay. This oven reaches very high temperatures.
Glaze--A coating put on the surface of a clay piece. When this coating is baked at a very high temperature it melts and forms a glassy surface coating.
Wheel--An apparatus which spins rapidly. When a lump of clay is placed on this rapidly spinning surface it can be formed quickly into a symmetrical rounded countainer.
Scoring--A method of scratching and roughing up two edges of clay pieces which a re to be joined together. This helps the two pieces to adhere better.
Greenware--Dry, formed clay pieces which are ready to be baked. Clay pieces at this stage are very fragile.
Firing--The process of baking clay at extremely high temperatures to harden it.
Pinch--A forming method in which the thumb and finger are used to squeeze the clay ently into a shape.
Coil--A forming method which uses long, thin, snake-like strips coiled on top of one another.
Slab--A forming method in which flat uniformly thick pieces of clay are cut and pieced together to build a container or other clay object.
