・Understanding some basic facts about the organization of the periodic table can help us predict how the various elements will interact with each other and even help us predict some properties of the compound they may form.
・The table organizes elements into periods(horizontal rows) and group(vertical colims) according to their atomic numbers.
・Their are several patterns that result from this arrangement.
・The first pattern we will be looking at is that of how the metallic elements can be found in one region of the table, the non-metallics in another region and with what are called metalloids(elements with characteristics of both metals and non-metals) spannning that border.
・The negatively charged particles that surround a nucleus of an atom are colled electrons and are what dictate the behavior of that element.
・Electrons move rapidly around the nucleus in regions called shells.
・Each period down there is an additional shell.
・Each group across there is anothe electron in the outermost shell-called the valence shell.
・The electrons in the outermost shell are referred to as valence electrons.
